Final Thoughts and Conclusion

BitFenix Colossus

Being a pre-production first offering from a new company, I was impressed with the Colossus and BitFenix. The Colossus's design and build is nice, solid, and laid out well. I really like the SofTouch coating; it has a very different look and feel to it. Normally LED lighting is not my thing, but the Colossus has an interesting look to it, almost TRON like. The ability to shut the lighting off is a massive plus as sometimes you just don't want extra light in a room, and the Colossus will light up a small room.

There are really only two major downsides to the Colossus as the design sets. The first is the overall weight of the case; it's pushing 60lbs without a system. Some of this weight is due to the steel construction, but it's solidly built so it should last a long time and handle being moved. The bulk is most likely due to the doors and their lighting system. Each of the doors weighs in at just shy of 6.5lbs each. BitFenix says that the doors are on the list of things being addressed for the final production. I hope the weight is one of the things being addressed.

The only other thing I found was the front panel wiring. The cables, especially the audio cable, could stand to be a good 3~5 inches longer. It would make for routing behind the tray easier for the clean look and optimal air flow. The USB3 cables are more than long enough to reach the back of the case so those are okay.

The release date for the Colossus is mid September, and BitFenix says it will carry an MSRP of $169. In that price range the Colossus is going to be fighting with some already heavy hitters like the Cooler Master HAF-932 and HAF-X, Antec DF-85, and the upcoming Corsair 600T. All have similar features and closeness in price. The big thing the Colossus has going for it is its external looks. The Colossus comes essentially pre-modded with the LED effects and not plain Jane exterior. Stuff that some gamers want, but don't have the time, money, tools, and skill to cut up a case and have it come out looking good.

BitFenix Colossus

We have been told we will be receiving a production version of the Colossus soon, so I will hold my final judgment until then, but for now the BitFenix has shown that they are going for quality and I eagerly await the final production version of the Colossus.

Legit Bottom Line: BitFenix Colossus is the first offering from the fledgling company and it's big and heavy as the name suggests, but I will hold final thoughts until we see the production Colossus.
