Power Consumption

For testing power consumption, we took our test system and plugged it into a Kill-A-Watt power meter. For idle numbers, we allowed the system to idle on the desktop for 15 minutes and took the reading. For load numbers we measured the peak wattage used by the system while running the OpenGL benchmark FurMark 1.7.0 at 1920x1200 resolution.

Total System Power Consumption Results

Power Consumption Results: The ASUS GeForce GTX 465 graphics card has a very respectable idle power consumption of 150 Watts with a single monitor and was the lowest of all the graphics cards tested. At full load the PNY GeForce GTX 465 wakes up and is fairly power hungry as it uses ~37W more at full load than an ATI Radeon HD 5850 for example. When testing the cards over the past few days in the Missouri summer heat, we could certainly tell a room temperature difference between the ATI and NVIDIA cards during our hours and hours of testing on each card. When it comes to temperature levels the ATI Radeon HD 5000 series has the clear lead over the GeForce GTX 400 series.
