Colin McRae: DiRT 2

Colin McRae DiRT 2

Colin McRae's Dirt 2 features five racing disciplines, all of which are playable offline and online. In addition, three 'special modes' are included. Dirt 2 runs on an updated version of the EGO engine, which powered Codemasters' Race Driver: GRiD as well. The engine most notably features an updated physics engine, which models realistic weight transfer during turning maneuvers, allowing the player to incorporate advanced driving techniques such as the Scandinavian Flick.

For testing, the in-game benchmark was used which runs you through one lap of a London super special stage behind Travis Pastrana's #199 2010 Impreza STI(using the Chase Cam). At both resolutions settings were cranked to Ultra with the exception of Post Process (where medium denotes DX10, and high denotes DX11) and Multisampling was set to 8x MSAA.

Based on the results I want to say that DiRT 2 is in fact in DirectX 9 when Post Processing is at medium as the 9600 GSO proves weaker than the GT 240 in DirectX 10 testing across the board, I sent Codemasters an email about that and will update upon reply. Clearly you can see that the 1GB frame buffer helps the HD 5670 as it had much higher framerates at 1920x1080 than the 9600 GSO and GT 240. Overall the AXLE  Radeon HD 5670 handles itself nicely considering 33FPS at 1920x1080 at near highest settings is still quite playable.

At the highest available settings in DiRT 2, the AXLE Radeon HD 5670 is only 14FPS behind the HD 5770. At a playable 35FPS at the low resolution, and still up at 27FPS at 1920x1080 I would have to say that if DiRT2 is your game of choice an HD 5670 does well at ultra settings.
