A look Around the iPhone 4
The iPhone 4 has a stainless steel band wrapping around the phone that not only looks good, but is said to add strength to the phone. Apple says they created the band from their own alloy, then forged to be five times stronger than standard steel. The CNC-machined band is the mounting point for all the components of iPhone 4. The band provides impressive structural rigidity and allows for its incredibly thin, refined design. It also functions as both iPhone 4 antennas, which is very slick. The two round buttons shown here on the left side are the new volume buttons that are now circular click buttons. This is much nicer than the rocker volume switch that was on the previous iterations of the iPhone. The slider button above the volume buttons is for ring/silent modes.
The bottom of the iPhone 4 is where the speaker, microphone, and the 30-pin dock connector port reside. While most phones have only one microphone, iPhone 4 has two. The main mic, located on the bottom next to the dock connector, is for phone calls, voice commands, and memos. The second mic, built into the top near the headphone jack, is for FaceTime calls and for making your phone call sound quality better. It works with the main mic to suppress unwanted and distracting background sounds, such as music and loud conversations. This dual-mic noise suppression helps make every conversation a quiet one.
On the right side of the iPhone 4 is the Micro SIM slot and another notch in the stainless steel band at the bottom.
On the top of the iPhone 4 you have the power & sleep button, headphone jack, and yet another notch. The backside of the phone is reportedly made from the same kind of glass as the front.
The iPhone 4 has a 5-megapixel camera built into it that captures amazingly detailed images. This 5-megapixel camera features 5x digital zoom you can even shoot self-portraits with the front camera although it only supports VGA resolution. The iPhone 4 also has a built-in LED flash that helps brighten low-light scenes.
The iPhone 4 is thinner than the iPhone 3G and 3GS as it is just .37 inches thick. Sitting next to the .48 inch thick iPhone 3G, it makes it the 3G look like it needs to go on a diet. What is really interesting is that both phones weigh 4.8 ounces, so it gives the iPhone 4 a heavier feel even though it's smaller. The higher quality electronics weight more, so if this theory is true the iPhone 4 is off to a good start.
The flat back is going to take some getting used to, but it does look better than the rounded back used on the iPhone 3G and 3GS.
