A Closer Look At The XFX Card

The XFX Radeon HD 5830 has an overall length of 10.25 inches, so this isn't a little card by any means. In order to keep the XFX Radeon HD 5830's temperatures in check, XFX uses a custom cooling solution that features a 70mm fan. We will look at the heatsink assembly in greater detail shortly. On the top left of the XFX Radeon HD 5830 is the pair of interconnects that is required for running in CrossfireX.

The back of the XFX Radeon HD 5830 left bare with the exception of a sticker that has the serial number and model number on it. The heat sink is attached with the four screws you see here. Looking closely you can see the circuitry of the eight memory IC's.

The XFX Radeon HD 5830 has the usual connectors for displays. There is a piar of dual link DVI ports, a HDMI port, and a Displayport. If you are looking to run an Eyefinity set-up you will need to use a monitor with Displayport technology.

The XFX Radeon HD 5830 requires the use of two 75 Watt six pin PCI-e connectors. A 500 Watt power supply is recommended for a single 5830 and a 600 Watt is recommended if you are plan on running a pair of XFX Radeon HD 5830's in CrossfireX.

Once you pull the heat sink assembly off of the XFX Radeon HD 5830, you can see that the heat sink is a pretty simple design. XFX also keeps the power simple by using a four phase design with open face chokes. It's nice to see that they are keeping the VRM's cool with an aluminum heat sink as well.

The heat sink assembly has a pair of heat pipes with ~120 fins soldered in place. The fan is a 70x70x15mm fan that is rated for .43 Amps and a maximum speed of 4000RPM. For a small fan it move a decent amount of air, at maximum speed it will push 35.5CFM through the fins of the heatsink.

The heat sink itself has a copper base and the pair of copper heatpipes that run through the base have been soldered into place.

The Cypress chip is built using the 40nm technology and has an incredible 2.15 billion transistors.

The eight memory IC's are produced by Samsung (K4G10325FE-HC04) and are rated for a speed of 1.25GHz or 5.0GHz effective. The XFX Radeon HD 5830 comes from the factory with the memory clocked at only 1.0GHz. With any luck there should still be plenty of head room for some solid overclocking!
