XFX Radeon HD 5830 Performance Review

I have very mixed emotions about the XFX Radeon HD 5830. On its own, it is a solid performing card. Throw it into the mix with the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 465's which retail for forty bucks more (starting at $276.99 shipped) and it makes the decision about the XFX Radeon HD 5830 that much tougher.

Both the Galazy and EVGA GeForce GTX 465's were able to best the XFX Radeon HD 5830 throughout most of the tests. Though there are a few trade offs. Price is one factor to consider. The GeForce GTX 465's retail for forty bucks more than the XFX Radeon HD 5830. Is that boost in performance worth the the extra forty bucks? If it is, you will want to consider the XFX Radeon HD 5850 that sells for $289.99 shipped, which is only 13 bucks more than the GeForce GTX 465 and is said to outperform the GTX 465. It's a never ending battle, how fast do you want to go and how much are you willing to spend? Another factor to consider is the heat output of the cards. It's no secret that the GeForce GTX 4XX series puts out alot of heat. It may be nice in the winter, it can heat up your office for you, but in the summer it may make it to warm to be comfortable. The decision is ultimately up to you.

For those of you die hard ATI folks out there, the XFX Radeon HD 5830 does fill a serious price gap between the XFX ATI Radeon HD 5770 and the XFX ATI Radeon HD 5850. At the time of this writing the XFX Radeon HD 5770 can be found for as little as $159.99 and the XFX Radeon HD 5850 is can be found for $289.99. Currently the XFX Radeon HD 5830 is has a price of $239.99 which places the XFX Radeon HD 5830 right in the middle.

Overall the XFX Radeon HD 5830 was consistently near the halfway point of the HIS Radeon HD 5870 and the Sapphire Vapor X 5750. It may not be the fastest card out there right now, but it was able to hold it's own. The XFX Radeon HD 5830 is a great overclocker for those who like to tinker with clock speeds. It is a bit of free performance. What was nice about running the XFX Radeon HD 5830 overclocked was it scaled linearly in Aliens Vs. Predator. We were able to boost the core clock and the memory clocks by 22% and we saw a 22% increase in frames per second in the game.

Legit Bottom Line: If you're your budget is limited to under $250 the XFX Radeon HD 5830 will give you some great DirectX 11 Eye Candy with playable frame rates.
