Folding @ Home

Since the cards being tested all fall into the budget category, a very common intended use for these cards is to run Sanford's Folding @ Home GPU Client when not gaming. As you saw in the AXLE GT 240 review late in '09, a reference GT 240 is pretty close to the 9600 GSO as far as folding performance having the same stream processor count, but has significant gains with an overclock. Let's see how it fares compared to the 9800 GT and GTS 250 having fewer stream processors.

Folding@Home Client 6.23

Folding @ Home is a very difficult application to benchmark, because with the ever-changing project files provided by Stanford, you must do all testing at one time with the same unit since old units cannot be compared to new ones (certain work units can take up to 10 minutes to complete 1% while others can take only 1 min to complete 1% on the same card), which is why you don't see many reviews include such testing.

Below is a chart showing the time each percent took to complete on Project: Project: 5767 (Run 5, Clone 23, Gen 563) using F@H Client Version 6.23 of GPU2.

Benchmark Results: On Project 5767 (Run 5, Clone 23, Gen 563), the 9600 GSO completes each percent in exactly one minute and eleven seconds with no variation, beating both reference GT 240's. Once overclocked, the PNY GT 240 beats out even the reference 9800 GT, which is impressive given the difference in stream processors. The GTS 250 completes work units significantly faster than any other card tested, which is to be expected having the most stream processors and also the highest clock speeds.
