Blu-ray Video Playback

CyberLink PowerDVD 9 Ultra

To test CPU Utilization during Blu-Ray playback I used CyberLink PowerDVD 9 Ultra (build 9.0.2320.0) and enabled hardware acceleration within the application (as seen above). CPU utilization was logged for 90 seconds of playback with each movie, and the results were taken. Movies were played back in full screen mode with the desktop resolution set to 1920x1080, or 1080p.

The movie tested:

  • MPEG-4 - Star Trek (Chapter 2)

CPU Usage:

  • Red Line - HP DV4-1555dx notebook with Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
  • Blue Line - ASUS K42F notebook with Intel HD Graphics
As you can see from the chart above the CPU usage during Blur-ray playback is all over the place, but the Arrandale system (blue line) clearly used less CPU when watching a movie on your laptop.  Let's graph out the performance.

CyberLink PowerDVD 9 Ultra

As you can see from the performance monitor results both system easily played the Blu-Ray movies and even the peak CPU load was under 35%. The Intel Core i5 540 processor used less CPU power in order to render the HD video, so will that make a difference in the battery test? In fact, will the HP DV4-1555dx entertainment notebook even have enough battery life to play a two hour long Blu-ray title when having an average CPU usage of 22%?
