Patriot Box Office – HD Performance
After quickly setting up the correct resolution and networking properties for the Patriot Box Office, we wanted to see just how good this box was playing our content.
We started off by looking at some high-def trailers played from a local drive. We played a 1080P copy of Avatar’s Trailer and the newest Alice in Wonderland trailer. Both of these MKV files played with no problem from our local drive. In fact, when we streamed them from our NAS or shared folder on the PC, the Box Office handled the transcoding with no issues.
The graphic interface is still not as slick on the Patriot as Mac OS or Windows 7, but it gets the job done. We especially like the “preview” window that will start playing or displaying the multimedia in your library. For some, this can get annoying and less useful over time, but Patriot saw fit that we can turn this feature off.
Once again, we had no luck when trying to play our Blu-ray ISO rips over the network as that format continues to be one of the most elusive. Other than that one format however, the Patriot Box Office was a real star. Besides playing MKV video, the Box Office handled our AVI, FLAC, MP4, TS, and M2TS with no problems playing locally or over the network. Above you will see HD video (M2TS) that I captured during U2's visit to Southern California in October. The 1080 HD video played smoothly in 5.1 Dolby Digital sound with no hiccups, pauses or pixillation.
