Radeon HD 5870 With No HSF
With the cooler removed from the Radeon HD 5870 you can get a better idea of the card's layout and just why it is so large. All eight of the GDDR5 memory IC's that make up the 1GB frame buffer are located on the front of the card and are made by Samsung.
The GPU of the Radeon HD 5870 was code named RV870 and runs with a core clock of 800MHz on the 1600 shaders that are located on it. The die is 40nm, but due to the extra shaders it has become fairly large as it is now 334mm2. This is 1.27x larger than the RV770 GPU found on the Radeon HD 4870 as it was 263mm2.
