Inside game consoles on the market today from both Microsoft and Sony hide custom multi-core AMD processors with Radeon graphics thrown in to support all those cool games we all play every day. AMD has announced that it will also be the heart inside the Ataribox game console that is coming soon marking another win for the company on the custom chip side of things. The only current major console that doesn’t use AMD is the Nintendo Switch using NVIDIA hardware inside.

Forbes reports that the chip inside the Ataribox was speculated to be an x86 based mutli-core unit. So far AMD hasn’t announced exactly what the processor inside the console will have as far as cores for CPU and GPU. Forbes does offer some speculation though. The console will be priced at $250-$300, a custom APU with 6-8 cores supporting 12-16 threads and a mid-range GPU using AMD Vega tech are possible.

“With Ataribox, we wanted to create an open system, a killer product where people can game, stream and browse with as much freedom as possible. Atari games and content will be available as well as games and content from other providers,” said Fred Chesnais, Atari Chief Executive Officer. “We also wanted to launch Ataribox with our community, and reward our fans with exclusive early access, special editions, and include them as active participants in the product rollout.”

We do know that the Ataribox will be able to play a giant back-catalog of classic Atari games. It will also offer current titles from a range of studios. Atari had promised more details on the console and content partners at a later date.
