Temperatures have always played a critical role on storage drives and in recent years we’ve seen it cause drives to fail prematurely and we’ve even seen some SSD performance results change for the worse if components were too hot or too cold. Since temperature is an important thing to keep an eye on we check the idle and load temperatures on all of the drives that we review. To get the idle temperature results we leave the drive sitting on an open air test bench in a room that is 19C. For the load numbers we use IOMeter to write 128KB to the drive sequentially for 20 minutes and record the top temperature.

ADATA SU800 Temps

The ADATA SU800 Ultimate 512GB drive had an idle temperature of 17-18C and we found that it topped out at 60C after doing 20 minutes of straight 128KB sequential writes across the entire drive with IOMeter. This heavy workload isn’t normal, but when doing writes to the drive we saw the temperature shoot up very quickly. This drive does get toasty!

    Yet, in what is arguably the most difficult test, the Sustained Write test, it performed among the top four. Two of the other top performers, the Samsung 850 EVO and OCZ VX500 both cost 25% to 35% more at Amazon and Newegg. Only Crucial’s MX300 matched the ADATA for both price and performance. Four other TLC drives tested all fell well short of the ADATA’s performance and cost about the same. So, the review’s bottom line is a damn-it-with-faint-praise throwaway which signally fails to reflect the SU800’s solid achivement. I call that obvious negative bias.

    Your description of the SU800’s sustained write performance is damning it with faint praise. For a budget-sector consumer TLC-based drive to sustain a high Write for over 170GB is truly outstanding. At the very least you should emphasize that home users are unlikely to EVER encounter any drop-off in Write speed with this SSD.
