Huge 60TB SSD Coming From Seagate In 2017

By

Seagate is showing off a massive 60TB SSD at the 2016 Flash Memory Summit. The 60TB SAS SSD comes in a 3.5-inch form factor and should be commercially available sometime in 2017.

The drive is designed for enterprise use and can hold 12,000 DVD quality movies or over 400 million social media-level photos! Those numbers are pretty wild if you think about it for a single drive. Seagate also pointed out that just 17 of these drives will give you 1PB of storage! While some might be turned off by the 3.5″ form factor, it was designed this way so data centers could replace their old 3.5″ hard drives with these SAS SSDs. Seagate notes that they should be able to offer 100TB SAS SSDs in the future in this form factor.

The power numbers are pretty impressive too as just 1W per 4TB of storage space, so this 60TB drive would use 15W of power. On the performance from it appears the drive uses a dual port 12Gbit/s SAS interface and offers 150,000 random read IOPS. The sequential read/write numbers are 1,500 MB/s and 1,000MB/s. Not bad and we can’t wait to see these massive storage drives debut in 2017!
